Sculptured or Chamfered Windows — What's the Difference?
Chamfered frames are sleek and modern. Sculptured frames are soft and traditional. Here’s how to choose the right uPVC window style for your home.
When you’re choosing new uPVC windows, you’ll almost certainly come across two options for the glazing bead: chamfered or sculptured. It sounds technical, but it simply describes the shape of the plastic trim that holds the glass in place, and it makes a real difference to how your windows look from both inside and out.
What is a Chamfered Window Frame?
A chamfered window has straight, angled edges on the glazing bead, giving it a clean, sharp profile. You’ll sometimes hear this called a bevelled finish. The lines are precise and geometric, which suits modern homes, new builds, and contemporary extensions particularly well.
If your property has clean architectural lines or you’re going for a minimalist look, chamfered is usually the natural choice. The slimmer visual profile also makes it a popular option where you want to maximise the amount of glass on show.
What is a Sculptured Window Frame?
A sculptured window, sometimes called an ovolo profile, has soft, rounded curves on the glazing bead rather than sharp angles. The shape is designed to echo the look of traditional timber window frames, which is why it suits period properties, older homes, and cottages so well.
If your home was built before the 1980s, or has a more traditional feel, sculptured frames will sit far more naturally than a chamfered finish. The rounder lines blend in rather than stand out, which is often exactly what you want.
